Night Journey
Taiwan, Czech Republic | 2025 | 38min | Documentary | Asian Premiere
The Walker enters the dream of a small town in Eastern Europe.
A cold autumn night.
The townspeople have long gone to sleep, or they hide inside the cinema.
Tsai Ming-Liang's films are also a kind of dream.
People linger between sleep and waking,
waiting for a mist to arrive.
Back Home
Taiwan | 2025 | 65min | Documentary
Anong returned home to Laos, accompanied by Tsai Ming-Liang. Herds wandered, the wind stirred the trees, and lights flickered beneath the water. In this no man's land, the abandoned houses stood silent—yet each seemed to bear a different face, quietly telling its own story. A camcorder. A camera. And a film was made.

Over the past year, Tsai Ming-Liang has completed two films. Night Journey is the twelfth film in the Walker series, set in Jihlava, Czech Republic. In the quiet city where everyone sleeps, Lee Kang-Sheng, dressed in a red robe, walks the streets as a spirit of the night. As audiences fall asleep watching the walker's slow footsteps in the cinema, he wanders through their dreams and arrives at the theatre. The film is a love letter to the cinema itself, a place where one can look upon the same world as others yet dream differently, where beings move between fantasy and reality, and where it is possible, for a moment, to withdraw from the world and reflect.
Alongside this beautiful new film about cinema and dreams, last year's Back Home will also be screened. In 2001, Tsai Ming-Liang participated in the JEONJU International Film Festival's production programme Digital Short Films by Three Filmmakers, where he shot his short film A Conversation with God using a digital camcorder for the first time. Last year, he picked up a small camera once again and travelled to Laos, the homeland of the actor Anong Houngheuangsy, with whom he has been collaborating in recent years. The result is a precious work that demonstrates how cinema can be created with the most minimal means.
By chance, watching Night Journey and Back Home one after the other makes it impossible to know whether Anong, drifting through the Czech Republic, fell asleep on a bus and dreamed of going home, or whether he actually returned home. (Sung MOON)
